In Southern Nevada, the Indigenous Student Association is making a big impact on education and community involvement for Indigenous students in sixth grade and up. Founded by McKinley McPherson, the non-profit organization aims to advocate for the community and encourage cultural revival for its members.
The idea for the Indigenous Student Association started a few years ago when McPherson, along with other high school students, realized that there were no organizations available for Indigenous students in the area. As a result, McPherson decided to create one to bring together the Indigenous community and those who were interested in learning more about Indigenous cultures, regardless of their tribal affiliations or school backgrounds.
Since then, the Indigenous Student Association has become a community hub for Indigenous students and allies to meet, connect, and organize. The organization offers community events and volunteer opportunities, which benefit the Indigenous community in Southern Nevada.
For McPherson, it’s all about providing a space where Indigenous students can find community and meet other Indigenous students. “I know that definitely is a really big impact on our education and in our own personal friendships,” she said in a recent interview.
The Indigenous Student Association also focuses on advocating for the Indigenous community, including working to increase awareness of Indigenous issues and promoting cultural revival. By advocating for the community, the organization hopes to make a positive impact on the education and well-being of Indigenous students in the area.
