The Henderson Bowl lived up to its reputation Friday night, delivering another instant classic as Green Valley edged Basic 42–40 in a game defined by back-and-forth momentum and late drama. From the opening drive to the final whistle, neither team allowed the other to breathe, embodying a rivalry that has been one of Southern Nevada’s fiercest for decades.

Green Valley opened strong behind junior quarterback Michael Lewis, whose poise and precision set the tone. His chemistry with sophomore wideout Kalil Usher stretched the field early, while running back Sonny Uranich gave the Gators balance on the ground. On defense, seniors Sam Byington and Aiden Tiqui kept Basic honest, disrupting drives with timely stops and recoveries.

But if the Gators struck first, the Wolves answered in kind. Basic’s senior quarterback Jayveon Rose, already among the valley’s top passers, refused to let the game slip. He found senior receiver Christopher McKenzie for momentum-shifting catches, while junior running back Adrian Ramos powered through tackles to keep chains moving. Senior Jacori Turner added bursts of speed that complemented Ramos’ bruising style, keeping Green Valley’s defense guessing. Defensively, linebacker Madden Spielberg and edge rusher Irae Pulalasi gave Lewis little comfort in the pocket, forcing hurried throws that swung momentum back toward Basic.

The game became a carousel of turnovers and quick scores. Each time one side gained ground, the other seized it back — a rhythm that spoke to the rivalry’s old reputation for “toxic but unforgettable” intensity, as one former player once put it. While years have softened the edges of animosity, the fire remains unmistakable when Henderson pride is on the line.

That fire is part of what has kept the Henderson Bowl so enduring. For decades, the matchup between Green Valley and Basic has defined Henderson high school football, producing unforgettable Friday nights that ripple far beyond the city. Alumni still recall the infamous GVK era (Green valley killers), to Basic loyalists those years were a proving ground, shaping the determination to fight harder and close the economical gap. Now, with both programs continuing to produce talent, the Bowl remains as competitive as ever.

Ultimately, Green Valley held the final word this time, making the last defensive stand to preserve its two-point lead. For head coach Bill Powell, the win was a sign of growth in tight moments. “Super proud of my kids tonight,” Powell said. “It seems like the last four or five times it’s come down to a one-possession game. We had to make a play at the end, and we were able to do it.”

Basic’s veteran head coach Jeff Cahill, now in his 17th season, acknowledged the heartbreak but praised the fight. “It was a great game, came down to the wire,” he said. “They just made a few more plays than we did.”

In the end, the 42–40 score will be remembered not just for the numbers on the board but for the names that made them possible — Lewis, Usher, and Uranich for Green Valley; Rose, McKenzie, and Ramos for Basic. Another Henderson Bowl is in the books, another chapter in a rivalry where history looms large and nothing ever comes easy.
