Road Kills Spur Action

Local and state law enforcement agencies announced a coordinated traffic enforcement initiative aimed at reducing rising roadway fatalities across the Las Vegas Valley.

The effort brings together the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Nevada State Police Highway Patrol, North Las Vegas Police, Boulder City Police, and Clark County School Police.

Deputy Chief Jose Hernandez said the region has seen significant increases in speed-related collisions, impaired driving, and pedestrian-involved crashes.

Last year, 293 people were killed in traffic incidents across the valley. As of Oct. 31, this year’s fatalities had already reached 299.

“These aren’t just numbers,” Hernandez said. “These represent lives lost, families changed forever, and communities impacted. This is unacceptable and completely preventable.”

The new initiative will focus on speeding, reckless driving, impaired driving, distracted driving, and pedestrian-related violations.

Hernandez said the community will see increased, highly visible enforcement on major roadways, in neighborhoods and in areas with a history of severe crashes.

The agencies will use data-driven deployments based on years of collision analysis to determine enforcement zones.

Hernandez said each agency will also participate in community education efforts aimed at promoting basic safety practices such as slowing down, wearing seat belts, driving sober and avoiding distractions.

Major Kevin Honea of the Nevada Highway Patrol said the multi-agency partnership has been discussed for years and is “long overdue.”

“Lives will be saved,” Honea said. “It’s not just going to be on the freeway. We’re going to be everywhere targeting all of the activities that we know lead to crashes.”

During a brief question-and-answer session, Hernandez said officers will focus on intersections and corridors with high rates of repeat collisions, especially those resulting in fatalities.

He emphasized that education will accompany enforcement, beginning with everyday interactions officers have with residents and with ongoing outreach in schools.

Both leaders said the initiative depends on community participation.

“It’s going to take more than just your law enforcement agencies,” Hernandez said. “We need the community’s help and their support. One life lost is too many.”
