Murder Suicide at the Rio Hotel & Casino

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department homicide investigators were on scene at the Rio Hotel and Casino, 3700 W. Flamingo Road, following the deaths of a woman in her mid-30s and her preteen daughter, whose bodies were discovered inside their hotel room Sunday afternoon.

According to LVMPD Homicide Lt. Robert Price, dispatch received a welfare check call at approximately 10:45 a.m. Sunday from family and friends asking officers to locate the pair. Officers arrived, met with hotel security, and spent approximately 15 to 20 minutes knocking on the door and calling into the room. Receiving no response and with no information beyond the welfare request, officers cleared the scene.

Hotel security continued receiving calls from the family throughout the afternoon. At approximately 2:30 p.m., security returned to the room, knocked several times, received no response, and made entry. Both the woman and her daughter were found deceased inside. Security immediately backed out of the room and called 911.

Lt. Price told reporters the investigation indicates the mother shot her daughter and then shot herself. He confirmed a note was left at the scene but said its contents are part of the ongoing investigation. No gunshots were reported by neighboring guests.

According to Price, the two had traveled to Las Vegas for a dance or cheer competition. He said the state they traveled from remains under investigation. Family and the cheer team have been notified.

LVMPD has not officially released the names of the victims. Additional information will be released through the department’s Public Information Office as the investigation continues.
