LVMPD’s Accountability Band-Aid

Less lethal weapons, such as tear gas, tasers, and body cameras, have gained popularity as a way to reduce fatalities in police encounters. However, their use has also come under scrutiny in recent years for their role in instances of police brutality and the questionable motivations behind their adoption.

One example of the failure of less lethal weapons to address systemic issues and hold police accountable is the case of Jorge Gomez in Las Vegas. Gomez was shot with beanbags and later blamed for his own death, despite evidence suggesting he was running from the beanbags after being asked to disperse. This highlights the protection of killer cops by police unions and the influence of profit-driven companies within the paramilitary industrial complex in the United States.

The killing of Isaiah Williams in Las Vegas, who was the victim of a no-knock warrant served at the wrong address. Williams, who should be protected by Nevada’s stand-your-ground law, was killed by police after they threw a concussion grenade through his window and stormed his apartment with a light announcement of their upcoming breach. The use of the concussion grenade, which can cause serious injuries and is considered a weapon of mass destruction, further illustrates the need for caution and accountability in the use of less lethal weapons.

It is important to carefully consider the potential impact of less lethal weapons on individuals, organizations, and society as a whole before taking any action. As a society, we must approach the use of these weapons with a critical eye and verify the accuracy and authenticity of information before making decisions based on it. While less lethal weapons may have the potential to reduce fatalities, they should not be relied upon as a sole solution and must be used with caution and accountability.

Additionally, it is important to examine the motivations behind the adoption of less lethal weapons, in the case of the LVMPD protecting private property like they did during the 2020 protests to protect the Las Vegas strip from the first amendment. This raises questions about the true intentions behind the use of these weapons and whether they are being implemented as a genuine solution or as a way to distract from deeper issues and maintain the status quo.

Furthermore, the use of less lethal weapons as a way to manipulate the media and the masses should not be overlooked. In the Police State of the Union video by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, it was stated by former sheriff now governor of Nevada Joe Lombardo that the killing of George Floyd was the reason behind an increase in violent crimes in Las Vegas. However, this ignores the larger issues at play and serves to deflect blame and distract from the true root causes.

It is crucial that we examine the role of less lethal weapons in our society and consider the potential consequences and ethical concerns associated with their use. By being aware of these issues and taking steps to protect against them, we can work towards creating a more just and accountable system.

In conclusion, the use of less lethal weapons in law enforcement and other contexts has been a controversial and complex issue. While these weapons may be intended to subdue individuals safely, they have also been used to cause harm and have raised ethical concerns. It is important to consider the motivations behind the adoption of less lethal weapons and to examine the potential consequences and impact on society as a whole.
