A shallow earthquake shook eastern Egypt before dawn Monday, and more than 3,000 people across four countries felt the ground move.
The quake struck at 3:00 a.m. local time roughly 36 kilometers northeast of Suez, near the Great Bitter Lakes region of the Suez Canal corridor, at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers. Magnitude readings varied by monitoring agency: Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics put it as high as 5.6, Germany’s Research Centre for Geosciences measured 5.4, and the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a lower 5.0. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre logged more than 3,190 felt reports from residents.
Shaking reached Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said and the Nile Delta, extending up to 400 kilometers from the epicenter. Tremors crossed Egypt’s borders entirely, registering in the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Cyprus. In southern and central Israel, the quake was felt strongly enough that Israel’s National Research Institute confirmed detecting it in real time through its Truah alert system, though officials said the magnitude and distance from Israeli territory meant the system correctly did not trigger a public warning.
No casualties or property damage were reported anywhere. The Egyptian Red Crescent activated its emergency response plan regardless, instructing residents in the affected governorates to avoid any building showing signs of structural damage and to rely only on official updates rather than social media. Cairo International Airport confirmed its passenger terminals and operational facilities were inspected and cleared, with flights continuing on normal schedule.
Seismologists recorded a handful of aftershocks in the same area, ranging from magnitude 1.7 to 3.0, consistent with the aftershock pattern of a moderate crustal event. The quake’s shallow depth is what allowed it to be felt so widely relative to its modest magnitude; shallow earthquakes transmit more surface shaking than deeper ones of similar strength.
Damaging earthquakes are uncommon in Egypt, but not unprecedented. The country’s deadliest quake in modern history struck Cairo in October 1992 at magnitude 5.8, killing more than 500 people and displacing thousands, a nearly identical magnitude to Monday’s event. The difference between a felt tremor and a mass casualty event in Cairo has historically come down to depth, epicenter location, and the age of the buildings nearest the shaking.
Monday’s quake caused no deaths and no confirmed structural failures. That outcome was not guaranteed by the magnitude alone. It was a function of where the fault line broke, and how far that point sat from Cairo’s densest, oldest construction. The next one may not break in the same place.
