On the fourth floor of a research park north of the Strip sits a fake hotel room, a fake casino floor, and a fake sportsbook, built for one purpose: watching how people actually behave in them.
Black Fire Innovation opened in 2020 at UNLV’s Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, a partnership between the university and Caesars Entertainment built specifically to test new hospitality and gaming technology before it reaches a real casino floor. The 43,000-square-foot space includes mock hotel rooms, a full mock casino floor with blackjack tables, slot machines and a sportsbook, an esports studio, and a virtual reality lab, all built to function as a living laboratory rather than a showroom.
Why a Casino Company Needed a Behavioral Lab UNLV President Marta Meana said the collaboration draws on interdisciplinary research spanning architecture, psychology, and fine arts to strengthen the university’s role as a global leader in gaming and hospitality research. That interdisciplinary mandate is deliberate. Emerging technology on a casino floor, from computer vision tracking table games to signage that changes based on guest behavior, has to be tested against how real people actually respond to it before a resort will risk installing it across thousands of square feet of live gaming space.


The space is structured so testing does not disrupt an actual paying guest. Because the casino floor, hotel rooms, and sportsbook inside Black Fire are entirely simulated, researchers, students, and outside technology companies can run behavioral experiments, including how guests interact with new table game formats or in-room technology, without the risk of interrupting a single real gambler or hotel guest on the Strip.
What Gets Tested There Zach Miles, an executive with the UNLV Research Foundation who has overseen the space, described Black Fire as built to answer a specific behavioral question at every stage of the guest experience, from the hotel room to the esports arena. Recent work inside the lab has extended into an alcohol vending machine and other automated retail concepts on the mock casino floor, along with continued testing of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality applications for hospitality settings.


Private technology partners occupy the building alongside UNLV researchers and students, giving companies direct access to a controlled environment for testing consumer behavior before deploying a product across an actual resort. Intel joined the space as a technology collaborator, with company officials framing the partnership as an effort to build more immersive and intuitive guest experiences using visual analytics and internet-of-things infrastructure. UNLV’s own Office of Economic Development, which oversees the space, treats it as a workforce pipeline as much as a research facility, giving students direct, hands-on exposure to systems built to observe and shape human behavior at commercial scale.
A university and a casino company built a fake resort specifically to answer questions about how real guests behave once the technology being tested there reaches an actual casino floor. What happens to that behavioral data once a product graduates from Black Fire into a live resort, and how much of it a guest ever knowingly consents to generating, remains a question the lab’s public materials do not address.
