Clark County School District is short $50 million for the coming school year. The list of what’s on the chopping block includes foreign language, after-school programs, music and theater.

Clark County School District Superintendent Jhone Ebert confirmed the district faces $50 million in budget cuts for the 2026-2027 school year, affecting more than 1,200 employee positions across 284 of the district’s 375 schools, according to a memo the district sent to employees.

The memo identified 682 licensed positions, including teachers and counselors, along with 500 support staff positions and 64 administrative roles as currently slated for “surplus” — meaning the schools where those employees currently work no longer have funding to keep the position, though the employees themselves will not lose their jobs outright and can seek open positions elsewhere in the district.

District officials attributed the shortfall to a combination of factors: declining enrollment, falling local birth rates, and rising salary costs, which the district’s memo said account for 84% of its total budget. CCSD’s incoming kindergarten cohort numbers 17,618 students, nearly 30% smaller than the graduating senior class of 24,505.

The cuts extend beyond staffing. School organizational team members, parents and teachers have identified foreign language, after-school programs, music and theater as among the programs facing cuts, at risk, or feared vulnerable in future budget reductions, according to reports collected directly from schools.

Superintendent Ebert said 100% of elementary students will continue to have art and music as part of their required curriculum despite the cuts. She said decisions about which specific programs to reduce are made at the individual school level by principals and school organizational teams, though the district reviews entire schedules when a school considers shrinking a program.

Rebecca Dirks Garcia, president-elect of the Nevada Parent Teacher Association, said a surprising number of schools are cutting more than 10 staff positions each, in some cases representing close to 10% of a school’s total staff.

Ebert’s promise covers elementary art and music specifically. It doesn’t cover the theater programs, foreign language classes and after-school activities that schools across the district are weighing against a $50 million hole — decisions principals are making one budget line at a time, with no guarantee that what survives this year’s cuts survives next year’s.
